Job description: THE POSITION
*This is a seasonal, full-time position WITHOUT benefits. The season runs from approximately March until November at which time the employee is placed on leave without pay.
Do you enjoy working in the outdoors? Then join the Department of Conservation and Natural Resource’s Forbes State Forest and conduct routine construction and maintenance of facilities within the Forest District.
Work Hours: (Mon – Fri): 8:00am – 4:00pm
DESCRIPTION OF WORK
This position maintains a large signage presence on extensive trail systems by constructing new signs (layout, router, painting) and installing them throughout the trails system; clears roads and trails of brush and fallen trees using brush cutters and chainsaws; clears and maintains State Forest boundary lines; installs and maintains culverts and headwalls/tailwalls on roads and trails; plows and shovels snow in winter and mows grass in summer; cleans restrooms/latrines; and picks up trash and debris. Duties also include conducting prescribed fires; assisting in wildfire suppression activities; assisting in grooming snowmobile trails; performing basic maintenance (includes oil changes, filter replacements, tire rotation, etc.) on vehicles and machinery; maintaining/mowing roadsides and wildlife openings using brush hogs and debris blowers mounted on farm tractors; and installing and maintaining gates.
Essential Functions:
1. Uses chain saws and hand tools.
2. Traverses long distances over rough terrain.
3. Fights wildland fires.
4. Constructs or repairs facilities.
5. Works outside in varying temperatures and weather conditions.
6. Lifts and moves heavy loads, such as: bags of sacrete, metal gates, rocks, brush, etc.
7. Operates standard power equipment.
8. Plows and shovels snow.
9. Gathers and removes debris.
