Materials Scientist II

Job title: Materials Scientist II

Company: Advano

Job description: ABOUT ADVANO

Advano is a rapidly growing startup focused on improving lithium-ion batteries. Our core focus is the development of scalable, sustainable, silicon-based materials that enable increases in lithium-ion battery energy density. Our success will yield electric vehicles that travel further and while being more affordable. This is a hard-problem, and we take it on fearlessly.

ABOUT THE TEAM

We range from inorganic chemists to materials scientists to industrial engineers to IT professions with at least one lawyer and a sales guy thrown in, but we are all focused on delivering a scalable silicon-based solution to the next generation of lithium-ion batteries. We are a place where delivery is more important than pedigree.

We’re a bunch of high achievers dedicated to making this world a better place. We’ve created a learning environment at Advano where we encourage disparate ideas to existing, unsolved problems. We highly value diversity when it comes to problem solving. An inorganic chemist might see things from a different perspective than an applied physicist or a chemical process engineer. To solve the unsolved, unconventional and new perspectives are necessary. We look for reasons to support someone going the extra mile and giving it their all.

Essential Functions

  • Create design concepts for architectures that accommodate Si volume expansion and surface engineering strategies that limit SEI growth
  • Develop and execute bench scale synthesis and processing of anode materials for lithium-ion batteries
  • Make characterization plans to enable understanding of materials produced and identify other relevant characterization methods
  • Leverage electrochemical data (Battery cycling, DQ/DV, EIS, GITT) to help guide materials development
  • Generate presentations and communicate results in regular internal meetings
  • Collaborate with a cross-functional team to refine formulations and product scale up
  • Support ongoing intellectual property efforts

Required Education and Experience

  • 3+ years of materials processing experience in industry with a PhD degree in Chemical or Materials Engineering/Science is preferred. Alternatively, 5+ years of materials processing experience in industry with a BS or MS degree in Chemical or Materials Engineering/Science, but all other engineering and related degrees will be considered
  • Knowledge of chemistry (organic, polymer, inorganic), electrochemistry and materials science and related characterization techniques would be preferable
  • Capable of executing projects from planning to developing to manufacturing
  • Demonstrated ability to work as part of a team in a dynamic, fast-paced work environment
  • Outstanding written and verbal communication skills
  • The candidate must have strong analytical and problem-solving skills and must be able to design and conduct complex experiments, employing DOE approach to interpret and correlate experimental results with battery product performance.
  • Prepare reports and present to the team
