General Description of the Job Class

Perform a variety of routine and complex technical tasks in the performance of laboratory tests to obtain data for use in the diagnosis and treatment of disease. Job duties are dependent on the laboratory and may be composed of a combination of the following duties and responsibilities related to the specialization.

Tasks are performed according to written procedures and policies with careful monitoring of quality control and quality assurance practices.

Job Description

• Know and implement specimen acceptability criteria, including labeling requirements. Document specimen problems in the specimen problem log
• Initiate evaluation and follow-up of specimens outside of established review limits, acceptable limits, or instrument linearity and document appropriately
• Recognize alert values and take appropriate action (including notification of health care provider) as per policy
• Understand and implement quality control policies, document problems, and troubleshooting steps taken, as indicated
• Follow laboratory policy when correcting patient results, to include notification of the healthcare provider, and complete documentation
• Perform intra- and inter-laboratory QC and proficiency testing as required
• Comply with general university policies, including patient confidentiality
• Perform all responsibilities associated with assigned work areas
• Organize workload to efficiently produce accurate test results
• Be proficient and maintain good turnaround times for all assigned testing both routine and stat
• Prepare reagents according to directions and check expiration dates; restock supplies as needed
• Understand and perform preventative/corrective maintenance and document appropriately
• Recognize instrument malfunctions and troubleshoot problems (notify Sr. Tech/Analytical Specialist if problems cannot be resolved or if additional help is needed)
• Maintain a well-organized and clean work area and decontaminate area at end of each shift
• Verify results and report via the computer system and be aware of computer and instrument downtime procedures, and alternate reporting mechanisms. Understand the theory and principle behind all laboratory testing procedures

Education

• Bachelors of Science/Bachelor of Arts in Chemical, Physical, Biological or Clinical Laboratory Science; or Medical Technology. Generalist certification required for General labs. Generalist/Specialty certification required for specialty labs

Degrees, Licensure, and/or Certification

• Registry eligible. Generalist/Specialty Certification by a nationally recognized board/agency (required within 18 months of hire). Certification will vary depending on laboratory. Advanced degree (MS or higher) accepted in lieu of certification
