The Physician Assistant will serve as a supervised agent in the provision of patient care under the direct supervision of the supervising physician. The area of assignment is Mental Health Service. Routine Duties include: Performing initial histories and physical examinations on inpatients and outpatients. (Note: The supervising physician will review and countersign all admitting inpatient history and physical exams). Providing ongoing outpatient care for assigned patients. Performing periodic physical examinations on assigned panel of patients. Screening outpatients to determine need for further care; Prescribing medications as described in Prescriptive Authority section. Ordering diagnostic studies such as laboratory tests, x-rays, electrocardiograms (EKGs). Carrying out health promotion and disease prevention activities. Initiating and expediting requests for consultations and scheduling special tests and studies. Record each patient’s medical progress, updating and summarizing medical records, changing orders when appropriate, and notifying the responsible physician of significant changes in the patient’s condition. There must be documentation of consultation with the supervising physician. “Notes and Orders” do not routinely have to be cosigned. The supervising physician must countersign the discharge summary. Obtaining consent and documenting procedures performed for which the PA is responsible. Providing education and counseling of patients and families in preventive care, medical conditions and use of prescribed treatments and drugs.
